Schools
SolarBC plans to support the Solar for Schools program by providing funding towards the cost of solar thermal installations on 50 secondary schools across British Columbia.
The Solar for Schools program has installed photovoltaic systems on two schools in BC. The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, in partnership with Carmanah Power Systems has funded the solar for schools program to date. The program primarily provided support for solar technology that serves as an educational resource for the school for use in discussing renewable energy while supplying a portion of the school’s electricity needs. The Ministry has been contacted by a number of schools and school districts interested in participating in future phases of the program and currently has a waiting list of at least six schools. Outside of the Solar for Schools program, King George Secondary in Vancouver recently installed a 12 kWt equivalent solar thermal system, including heat metering equipment for educational use.
This project will compliment Natural Resources Canada’s ecoEnergy for Renewable Heat program that offers incentives towards solar hot water installations in the industrial, commercial and public institution building sectors. More information about this program is available at the ecoEnergy website.
Further details on how to apply for the SolarBC Solar for Schools project will be available soon. If you would like to express initial interest in this project, please send an email to us at info@solarbc.ca and we will contact you directly as information becomes available.
