Saanich
Steamrolling Over Those Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Municipality of Saanich is one of the most diverse and beautiful natural environments in the country and thrives on local organizations that are dedicated to improving the community’s quality of life.
In 2002, Saanich was the first municipality in the region to install solar powered pedestrian beacons. Forty-four pedestrian beacons now operate in Saanich entirely “off the grid,” even in the dark winter months. Since then, Saanich has implemented a variety of solar related initiatives and their search for opportunities to help reduce their carbon footprint is a big part of what makes them a SolarBC community.
They have a number of plans on the agenda, from a large-scale energy management plan that incorporates solar heating, to training workshops and seminars for workers, and public, on solar hot water. Saanich has also committed to the installation of at least one solar hot water system on a municipal building by 2010, with an overall goal to integrate these systems into the building fabric of the community.
